Red Valley Tour: The Martian Canyon of the Andes

The Red Valley (Valle Rojo) is a surreal destination near Cusco, known for its vibrant red mountains that resemble a Martian landscape. Sitting at over 5,000 meters above sea level, it’s perfect for adventurers seeking dramatic scenery away from the crowds.

The Red Valley Tour is one of Cusco’s best-kept secrets — an off-the-beaten-path hike with views that feel otherworldly. Located near Rainbow Mountain, Red Valley owes its striking color to high concentrations of iron-rich minerals in the soil.

We begin our day early, around 4:30 a.m., departing from Cusco toward Cusipata, where we’ll enjoy a local Andean breakfast.

From there, we drive to Llaqto or Pitumarca, where the hike begins. The trek to the Red Valley viewpoint takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, offering incredible views of snowcapped Ausangate, local wildlife like alpacas and vicuñas, and sculpted red rock ridges.

At the top, you’ll be rewarded with a 360° panoramic view of deep red hills and valleys. The vibrant tones shift with the sunlight, making this a paradise for photographers and nature lovers.

After exploring and taking photos, we descend along the same trail and enjoy a buffet lunch on the way back before returning to Cusco at approximately 5:30 p.m.
