Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca) is one of Peru’s most visually stunning and unique destinations. Located over 5,000 meters above sea level, this natural wonder features vibrant colors created by mineral deposits. A must-do for adventurous travelers and lovers of nature and geology.
The Rainbow Mountain Full Day Tour is a physically demanding yet unforgettable journey into the colorful heart of the Andes. We begin our day early at 4:00 a.m. in Cusco, heading south for a 3-hour drive to Cusipata, where a hot breakfast awaits.
We then continue to the starting point of the hike in Chillihuani (approx. 4,600 m.a.s.l.). From here, the trek to the summit of Vinicunca takes about 1.5 hours, crossing landscapes filled with grazing llamas and alpacas, traditional Andean villages, and panoramic views of the snow-capped Ausangate Mountain.
Upon reaching the viewpoint at over 5,000 meters, you’ll be amazed by the natural palette of red, orange, green, yellow, and turquoise hues spread across the mountain’s face — the result of millions of years of mineral layering and erosion.
After time for rest, photos, and soaking in the view, we hike back down and return to Cusipata for a well-deserved buffet lunch. We then drive back to Cusco, arriving around 5:00 p.m.
